liverpool

You'll never walk alone.

It was twenty years ago when I was last at Anfield (September 2, 1978) and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. We arrived late to the game, my friends and I after our long travel from our home town, Kettering, which started in the early hours of the morning, changing trains at Derby. We were only sixteen years old and football hooligans all four of us but none of us were interesting in fighting on this memorable occasion. I was the only neutral being a Villa supporter with two Liverpool and one Spurs fan. There were two Argentinian world champions playing for Spurs, Oswaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa and we were all excited to see how they would fare against England's best. Because we had arrived later than planned we missed the kick-off and were locked out of the ground the first half. The three roars from the Kop End during the first half were enough to tell us the score was 3-0 to the Super Reds. We four were rudely interrupted during our first-half lockout by angry Scousers who thought we were Cockneys because of our Southern accent. Just as we were about to get the kicking of our lives about two hundred Spurs fans came charging from nowhere and saved our lives. We got into the Mighty Anfield in the famous Kop at half-time and enjoyed the explosive roar of the Kop four more times as they smashed Spurs 7-0, my only visit to Anfield, so far. We tried not to wind our Spurs fan up too much on the journey home.
